Dynamics of topological defects and inflation.

چکیده
We study the dynamics of topological defects in the context of “topological inflation” proposed by Vilenkin and Linde independently. Analysing the time evolution of planar domain walls and of global monopoles, we find that the defects undergo inflationary expansion if η > ∼ 0.33mP l, where η is the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field and mP l is the Planck mass. This result confirms the estimates by Vilenkin and Linde. The critical value of η is independent of the coupling constant λ and the initial size of the defect. Even for defects with an initial size much greater than the horizon scale, inflation does not occur at all if η is smaller than the critical value. We also examine the effect of gauge fields for static monopole solutions and find that the spacetime with a gauge monopole has an attractive nature, contrary to the spacetime with a global monopole. It suggests that gauge fields affect the onset of inflation. Can topological defects be formed during preheating ?
We study the dynamics of a scalar field Φ with potential g(|Φ|− η)/2 (g: self-coupling constant, η: symmetry breaking scale) after inflation and make clear whether topological defects can ever be formed during preheating. In particular, we pay attention to the GUT defects (η ∼ 10GeV − 10GeV), and consider three types of fluctuations. The first one is produced due to parametric resonance, the se...
متن کاملChaotic Dynamics and Two-Field Inflation
We demonstrate the existence of chaos in realistic models of two-field inflation. The chaotic motion takes place after the end of inflation, when the fields are free to oscillate and their motion is only lightly damped by the expansion of the universe. We then investigate whether the presence of chaos affects the predictions of two-field models, and show that chaos enhances the production of to...

Alexander Vilenkin Institute of Cosmology, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155, USA Topological defects can naturally be formed soon after bubble nucleation in the open inflation scenario. The defects are not completely diluted away by the subsequent period of inflation in the bubble interior and can produce observable large-scale microwave background anisot...
متن کاملPhase Transitions in the Core of Global Embedded Defects
We demonstrate the existence of global monopole and vortex configurations whose core exhibits a phase structure. We determine the critical values of parameters for which the transition from the symmetric to the non-symmetric phase occurs and discuss the novel dynamics implied by the non-symmetric cores for defect interactions. We model phase transitions in the core of global embedded topologica...
متن کاملMonopole Inflation in Brans-Dicke Theory
According to previous work, topological defects expand exponentially without an end if the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field is of the order of the Planck mass. We extend the study of inflating topological defects to the Brans-Dicke gravity. With the help of numerical simulation we investigate the dynamics and spacetime structure of a global monopole. Contrary to the case of the Einst...
